June 01st; Increased Draft Lake Charles Channel |
|
The Lake Charles Pilots feel that there have not been any significant problems with ships at 39 feet of draft. Dredging of the Outer Bar Channel and portions of the Upper Channel has been dredged and we feel the channel is as good as it is going to get in the foreseeable future. Therefore, the Lake Charles Pilots hereby recommend a maximum fresh water draft of 40 feet on the Calcasieu Ship Channel up to the Port of Lake Charles at Mile 34. Shippers, agents and terminals need to verify that their own berths are deep enough to accept 40 feet before ordering ships of that draft to their berths. The Pilots are not the best source of the depth of water at individual berths; the individual terminal is the best resource for that information. As always, if problems are encountered, the Pilots will notify the users and reduce the draft accordingly.
